Personal property searches

In short

A search may happen where school staff believe that student or staff safety would be affected if it were not done immediately. The school will make reasonable attempts to protect a student’s privacy. Lockers and cubbies remain school property and can be searched at any time without notice. If criminal activity is suspected, the police are informed first.

When a search may happen

A search may occur where school personnel believe that the safety and security of students and/or staff may be affected if an immediate search is not conducted. School officials shall make reasonable attempts to protect a student’s privacy and refrain from locker or school bag searches unless they have a reasonable basis for doing so.

The rules

Individual or Personal Property Searches — Community Handbook 2026-27, p.31

• School cubbies/lockers may be provided for student use but are not to be considered the students’ private property. They remain the property of the school, and should the Head of School consider it necessary, the locker can be searched at any time, without prior notice to the student or parent.
• If the matter is to be dealt with as a discipline matter, all procedures regarding student conduct shall apply.
• If the proposed search revolves around a suspicion of criminal activity, the police shall be informed, and proper approval obtained prior to the search.
