Glossary

Schools run on abbreviations. Every term below appears somewhere on this site — hover or tap a dotted term in an article to see its one-line definition, or use this page.

PYP

Primary Years Programme — Nursery through Year 6.

The first of the three International Baccalaureate programmes KSIM runs. PYP students are dismissed to a parent or guardian at the front of the school.

MYP

Middle Years Programme — Year 7 through Year 11.

MYP students go to their homeroom for registration by 07:55 and may leave school independently.

DP

Diploma Programme — Years 12 and 13.

DP students register in the DP Exchange and may be granted off-campus privileges during free periods.

CAS

Creativity, Activity, Service — a required part of the Diploma Programme.

TOK

Theory of Knowledge — a required part of the Diploma Programme.

ECA

Extra-Curricular Activity — the after-school activities programme.

ECAs run 14:40–15:30 and the programme runs for roughly 12–14 weeks, twice each academic year.

BYOD

Bring Your Own Device — the policy, from Year 3 up, on personal devices at school.

DSL

Designated Safeguarding Lead — the member of staff who leads child protection at KSIM.

The Head of Student Support, Welfare & Inclusion holds this role. A Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) supports it.

DDSL

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead — deputises for the DSL on child protection.

REAL

KSIM's definition of high-quality learning: Respectful, Experiential, Authentic, Life-long.

IB Learner Profile

The ten attributes the International Baccalaureate expects students to develop, from Inquirer to Reflective.

ManageBac

The school system where attendance, behaviour records and reports are kept. Referred to as "MB" in the Handbook.

Toddle

The other school system used alongside ManageBac for recording student information.

BML

Used in a KSIM job title, but not yet defined by the school.

The Community Handbook uses this abbreviation (in "MYP BML English Support Teacher") without expanding it anywhere in the document. Rather than guess, it is listed here as an open question — see the content gaps note in the repository.
