Homework & home learning

Times below are the recommended amount of homework per week, alongside daily reading. The amount is differentiated by age and developmental stage, and the time an individual student spends may vary.

PYP — Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 20 minutes daily 30 minutes
MYPMiddle Years Programme — Year 7 through Year 11. — Years 7, 8 & 9 20 minutes daily 60 minutes
MYP — Years 10 & 11 20–30 minutes daily 60–90 minutes
DPDiploma Programme — Years 12 and 13. — Years 12 & 13 30 minutes daily the amount of work required to be successful in the DP programme

If the tasks are finished, the remaining time should be spent reading. Set this time aside every night wherever possible.

The school’s stated purpose for homework is to extend and apply learning from class in creative, meaningful and expressive ways. Home learning gives a student the chance to work independently and to develop self-discipline, skills and knowledge. It may reinforce work taught in class, but it can also stretch a student’s understanding.

Home learning is not busywork and is not simply a repetition of a skill. It is a form of formative assessment, and it tells teachers how a student is progressing. Homework is not optional, but a requirement of all students.

If your child finds it difficult to complete the home learning in the time above, use your discretion about how long they should work — then contact:

  • PYP — the classroom teacher
  • MYP and DP — the programme coordinator

See who to contact for what.

For extended absences due to unexpected circumstances, students and parents are encouraged to contact the teacher to discuss the instructional options available.
