Language profiles

In short

During admissions you tell the school about your child’s mother tongue, their exposure to other languages, and which additional language they will learn. That profile decides language course placement and any support or assessment accommodations. It is updated every year.

What you are asked for

As part of the admissions process, families provide information so the school can build a language profile for each individual student. Families are asked to indicate:

• Mother-tongue language(s)
• History of exposure to languages other than mother tongue
• Choice of additional language learnt, and the acquisition level if possible

What the profile is used for

The Student Language Profile tells the school about a student’s language abilities and needs. It guides decisions about placement in language courses and about specific support, which may include:

Assessment accommodations

The accommodations that may be offered

• Modification and/or definition of command terms and other instructions
• Translations and/or use of translation devices or dictionaries
• Use of additional visual aides
• Support provided by a teaching assistant
• Additional time for completion of assessments
• Customised formatting of written assessment materials to highlight key terms and concepts

Course placement

Language course eligibility depends on the phase level — this is set out in the school’s separate Language Policy.

Development over time

The profile tracks language phase development over time.

Who holds it

Student language profile information is maintained by the programme coordinator, is accessible to teachers, and is updated annually.
